Labour has unveiled its candidates to fight the 2014 European Elections in Yorkshire and the Humber.
They are – in order:
1. Linda MCAVAN
2. Richard CORBETT
3. Eleanor TUNNICLIFFE
4. Asghar KHAN
5. Helen MIRFIN-BOUKOURIS
6. Darren HUGHES
Two of them – Eleanor Tunnicliffe and Asghar Khan – are from Leeds. You can read more about all of them on our Page – European Elections 2014, under ‘About Us’.
Linda McAvan, Labour’s sitting Yorkshire & Humber MEP who tops the list having been reselected, said:
“I am delighted with the strong list of Labour candidates. They are a diverse group from all walks of life across Yorkshire and the Humber, and will be an asset in next year’s campaign to ensure everyone can make an informed decision about who really represents their best interests in Europe.
“Only Labour is standing up for people in this region and fighting the damage being done by this Tory-led Government, and only Labour will give the real prospect of getting the best deal for Britain in Europe.”
Richard Corbett, who topped the poll of Yorkshire & Humber Party members to determine the order of the other candidates, was “delighted to have received such overwhelming support from Labour Party members in Yorkshire and the Humber, and I relish the coming campaign to gain the right to once again represent our region in Europe.
“I stand for constructively fighting our corner in the EU, membership of which is a vital interest for Britain. We must use the EU for finding solutions to those problems that we and our neighbouring countries, because of our inter-dependence, have to face together.”
Harriet Harman MP, Labour’s deputy leader, said:
“I am proud that such strong, committed and inspiring people have been picked by ordinary Labour Party members to be their MEP candidates in Yorkshire and the Humber.
“Like the people they seek to represent, they come from all walks of life and from all the different communities across the region.”
This is a group of candidates supported and endorsed by people and groups across the entire Labour movement and throughout the region – by MPs, Shadow Ministers, Councillors and Council Leaders, Trade Unions, the Co-operative Party, the Fabians and a host of individual party members. They have been voted for in a ballot open to all Labour Party members.
Harriet Harman again
“Unlike David Cameron, whose first priority on Europe is appeasing the ever more extreme demands of Tory backbenchers, Labour MEPs will be a powerful One Nation voice who stand up for ordinary hardworking families.
“Their top priority is to be a strong voice in the European Parliament to make sure they get the best deal and bring jobs and growth here in Yorkshire and the Humber.”
We’ll be working hard to ensure that as many of them as possible are returned as Labour MEPs in 2014.
