At the Philip Coyne Labour Rooms, Otley
Dr Corinne Painter of Leeds University will talk about – Hilde Kramer: A Rebel in Munich, Moscow and Otley
In the midst of the German revolution at the end of the First World War, Hilde Kramer (1900-1974) aged 18 decided to dedicate her life to socialism and to making the world a better place. Little did she know that she was embarking on a journey that would lead her from her home in Munich to a new home in Otley. From leafleting the streets of Munich, to taking minutes in Moscow, join us to learn more about this extraordinary woman. Hilde campaigned tirelessly against militarism and for world peace, against the Nazi regime in the 1930s and as a member of the Labour Party she campaigned for the NHS.
This informal evening will introduce Hilde, the events which may have influenced her, and some of the cornerstones of her activism.
Dr Corinne Painter is a researcher in the German Department at the University of Leeds. She is currently researching women involved in the German revolution of November 1918 and this research will be used to create a new play “Women of Aktion” (October 2018).
