It’s harder to get the care you need

It’s harder to get see your family doctor. David Cameron scrapped Labour’s guarantee of a GP appointment within 48 hours – and now 60 per cent of patients say they can’t see their GP within two days. This throws ever more pressure on A and E departments.

Thousands of nurses and frontline staff have been lost from the NHS since David Cameron became Prime Minister. Experts say that A&Es don’t have safe staffing levels.

And treatments like cataract and knee operations are being rationed.

Royal College of General Practitioners says GPs are in crisis

Not known for making direct political attacks on the government, the RCGP is so concerned about the growing crisis in general practice, it has launched its own campaign calling for urgent investment by the Coalition:

“GP surgeries sit at the heart of local communities. We demand that the Government acts now to ensure practices have the resources they need to continue to provide the high quality care patients deserve.”

According to two RCGP polls of GPs:

  • 85% of GPs say the family doctor service is in crisis
  • 72% say they expect patient waiting times to increase in the next two years
  • 82% say the care of older people is at risk, as it is becoming more difficult to provide continuity of care

and now the RCGP says up to 100 practices in the UK — serving 700,000 patients — face closure over the next few months.

The LibDem/Tory Coalition is responsible for the crisis in our NHS

The LibDem/Tory Coalition wasted £3 billion and caused chaos with a damaging NHS reorganisation which David Cameron promised wouldn’t happen, that has led to over 4,000 NHS staff being laid off and then re-hired, many on six-figure salaries

The Coalition’s reforms put private profits before patient care, tying hospitals up in competition law.

Cuts to elderly care are sending more older people to A&E and making it harder to get the care they need at home.

Labour rescued the NHS after years of Tory neglect before. We’ll do it again.

Ed Milliband has guaranteed that with Labour, you will not have to wait more than 48 hours for a GP appointment. And if it’s urgent, you’ll be able to get an appointment the same day.

 Labour will also:

  • Repeal the LibDem/Tory Coalition’s NHS changes that put private profit before patients, so that NHS professionals can focus on your care, not competition law.
  • Give patients and the public a say when changes to local services are proposed.
  • Bring together physical health, mental health and social care into a single service to meet all of a person’s care needs – whole person care, built around patients, not bureaucrats.

Greg Mulholland and the Lib Dems

You can’t trust a word that Clegg, Greg and the Lib Dems say – on the NHS or on anything else. They are breaking all their promises and have been too weak to stand up to David Cameron.

Over the summer Alex will be campaigning across North West Leeds to build support for the campaign to cut GP waiting times. Sign Alex’s petition calling on David Cameron to guarantee patients an appointment with a GP within 48 hours here
