Official NHS data released on Friday morning reveals that 299,031 patients arrived at hospital A & E departments last week – the highest number on record.
We may have grown accustomed to problems during the winter months – though they were bad enough.
But now A & E departments have faced a summer crisis as patients struggle to get GP appointments and turn to hospital instead. The result if that departments are now hitting levels of pressure not reached during winter months.
In addition the figures showed that the A & E waiting time target was also missed for the 49th consecutive week.
Andy Burnham MP, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, said:
“David Cameron made it harder for people to get a GP appointment and, as a result, record numbers are coming through the doors of A & E.
“That’s why the next Labour Government will invest an extra £100m in general practice to help guarantee patients a GP appointment within 48 hours, or a same-day consultation with a doctor or nurse for those who need it.
“People can see how quickly the NHS is now heading downhill under this Government. A & E has just had its worst year for a decade. It is further proof you can’t trust David Cameron with the NHS.”
Indeed – and it’s not just David Cameron. You can’t trust the LibDem/Tory Coalition with it, either.
Britain – and the NHS – Will be Better under Labour.
