‘If we win the election 2015 the next Labour government will freeze gas and electricity prices until the start of 2017. Your bills will not rise: it will benefit millions of families and millions of businesses.’ - Ed Miliband, Speech to Labour Party Conference, 24 September 2013
Here’s what David Cameron said about it:
1. “A gimmick”
“This is not a policy; it is a gimmick” - David Cameron, Hansard, 9 October 2013, column 153
2. Something from a “Marxist universe”
“I know that the right hon. Gentleman would like to live in some sort of Marxist universe in which it is possible to control all these things, but he needs a basic lesson in economics.” - David Cameron, Hansard, 9 October 2013, Column 152
3. “A cynical ploy”
“The truth is that prices would go up beforehand, he would not keep his promise and prices would go up afterwards. It is a cynical ploy” - David Cameron, Hansard, 23 October 2013, Column 294
“The first thing that John Major said is that Labour’s policy is unworkable, and he is absolutely right.” - David Cameron, Hansard, 23 October 2013, Column 294
5 “Intellectually incoherent”
“What is intellectually incoherent is to promise a price freeze for 20 months’ time when we do not control the global price of gas—that is completely incoherent and a total con.” - David Cameron, Hansard, 27 November 2013, Column 252
6. “A price con”
“The fact is that it is not a price freeze; it is a price con” - David Cameron, Hansard, 16 October 2013, Column 733
7. Oh, and people should wear jumpers instead
‘Asked about whether people should “wrap up warm” and wear jumpers, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “Clearly, he is not going to prescribe the actions that individuals should take but if people are giving that advice that is something that people may wish to consider.”’ - Telegraph, 18 October 2013,
Nick Clegg didn’t think much of it either…
8. “A 24-carat con”
“It’s an economically illiterate con, it’s a 24 carat con.” - Nick Clegg, ‘Call Clegg’ on LBC, 24 October 2013
9. Owen Paterson called it “sheer bovine stupidity”
‘He then attacked ‘the sheer bovine stupidity of trying to engineer the rules of the market,’ condemning Labour’s announcement to freeze energy prices until 2017.’ - Total Politics, 29 September 2013
10. Energy Secretary Ed Davey said it would “risk the lights going out”
“When they tried to fix prices in California it resulted in an electricity crisis and widespread blackouts. We can’t risk the lights going out here too.” - Ed Davey, 24 September 2013
11. Eric Pickles thought chums would face lights going out
“…what will be a problem is we don’t want to find ourselves with a shortage of energy and the lights get turned out.” - Eric Pickles, BBC R4 Today Programme, 27 September 2013
Well. on Wednesday the boss of energy giant SSE said they’d, erm, freeze the bills.
“We agreed with Ed and we agree with people generally that what matters to consumers is bringing their bills down….I think he’s certainly changed the way people look at the energy market.” - Alistair Phillips-Davies, Chief Executive, SSE Energy.
Since then Tories and LibDems have been scrambling to contradict themselves.
Fact is – Ed got it right.
We agreed with Ed all along.
