Just one-year-to-go until next year’s Grand Depart – and celebrations will kick off in style on 7 July when the eagerly awaited Sky Ride event launches in Leeds city centre.
Hundreds of people of all ages will line up on their bikes outside the Town Hall to take part in the free mass-participation cycling event which will take them on a 5km circuit through the city centre, the university campuses and Woodhouse Moor.
Sky Ride Leeds is a great opportunity to ride with family and friends in a traffic-free city centre. There’ll be loads of free things for the whole family to do, so get your bikes ready and come and join in!
Look out for a special Tour de France zone where you can find out more about the elite riders, watch live coverage of this year’s race on a big screen and even get your very own TdF podium photo taken in front of a Champs-Elysees backdrop. Also keep a lookout for a range of street acts, who will be entertaining people throughout the day.
Head down to Victoria Gardens to find out more about Team Sky and see what makes the pros able to compete at the highest level. Have a go at static racing on a Watt Bike, or try an adapted bike for size. Relax at the British Cycling Bike Café.
At Woodhouse Moor there’ll be a chance for youngsters to try their skills with the team from Go-Ride, or on the BMX / skate park. West Yorkshire Metro and go:cycling will be offering a range of free cycling services, including one-to-one and group training, bike maintenance and group rides.
The free city bike ride is sponsored by British Cycling and Sky and delivered in
partnership with Leeds City Council and Metro.
Cllr Keith Wakefield, Labour Leader of the Council, said:
“Sky Ride Leeds is going to be a fantastic event for everyone to be part of. Having a traffic-free ride through the city centre for the first time will be great and we hope to see thousands of people of all ages taking part and soaking up the special atmosphere. ”
And by the way – Leeds City Council has recently signed up to ‘Go:cycling‘ – an initiative designed to get adults cycling for leisure and fitness. Go:cycling is a partnership between the West Yorkshire councils and Metro.
It’s designed to encourage more people to take up cycling. It’s open to all ability and type of cyclists. Participants can earn Bike Miles every time they log a cycle journey, then redeem their Bike Miles against a wide variety of rewards.
So – on your bike – for enjoyment and health.
